Number Two

Yay for number two! The second submission accepted that is. ;o) I won't say where it was accepted, but I will say it's coming out in the Fall. I spent some time last night going through colors for the perfect Autumn version of this design. I need 2 colors and right now I have 4 selected, 2 different colorways. I'm thinking that I will knit swatches in both variations and see which one speaks to me the loudest.

I am so glad that I took the plunge and risked rejection to start sending my designs around to different publications. You never know unless you try, right? I spent all last year saying that I wanted to design and to submit.... It took me a year to finally work up the courage. Almost a year to the exact day actually. Sometime in the early winter of '07 I wrote up my first design I thought to submit, got the photos done, wrote the description.... then chickened out.

So far I've been fairly successful with my design submissions. I know that the pathway isn't going to be all smooth and shiny. Got it. It's like that with music too. We'll see what tomorrow brings ;o)

Streeeeetch

Wow does it feel good to be getting back on track with eating and exercise! I woke up and did my morning yoga stretch before breakfast. I'm not sure which way I like it better, stretching before or after eating and coffee. I have a feeling that days I don't have to be out the door early I'll go with breakfast first just to let myself wake up a little more.

Yesterday was good with eating, not that my eating habits are really all that bad. I'll be put to the test tonight at knitting group, though. There's always goodies there and I don't want to fall off the wagon when I'm only a few days in! I do want to allow myself one day a week where I can maybe treat myself to something small that's "junky." I'll probably make that a day I'm hanging out with Brandon so I don't have to feel completely restrained.

Not to sound completely off my rocker or anything, but.... The other night I had a dream that I had a tattoo on my wrist. It was only a short snippit of dream, almost more like just a feeling. I think I was getting wound up and stressed and I lifted my right wrist and there was a symbol (almost like script...) that I looked at and it meant calm, focus, balance. It might have been two different symbols on top of one another, or one that was tall... I don't remember too much detail of what the image looked like, mostly just what it meant. Very odd for me because I rarely ever, actually pretty much never, remember dreams. I've got to look up "focus," "balance," and "calm" symbols to see if something is familiar. The first thing that popped into my head was "OM," but when I checked out the symbol to get a clear look I realized it wasn't that. I think I'll go do some image searches to see what I turn up.

Manic Monday

Yesterday's gig did go on and it turned out pretty well. There was a larger audience than I expected considering the previous day's ice and snow. It was our first gig of the new year (schedule here). Kinda looking at a slow-ish season right now. Not good when performing is your primary income. It would be helpful to boost the amount of fiddle lessons I have, but I'm not sure I can handle more student mentally, not that I have an overload right now. It's just that lessons have been frustrating me lately for all sorts of reasons that I don't feel like going over right now and getting all worked up about.

After I posted yesterday I thought of several more goals for 2009.....
  • Buy more handmade. Support other indie artists. (I already do this a good deal, but I'd like to have more handmade, one of a kind items.)
  • Try and make stretching or light yoga a part of daily routine. (I used to do this and it's amazing how much better you feel with 15-30 minutes a day.)
  • Tap every week. Once or twice a week take 20-30 minutes to brush up on tap.
  • Make time for learning. Continue to work through the Great Courses lectures and watch educational vidcasts.
  • Learn to spin on the Navajo spindle.
So there's a few more things for my list. I'll have to write everything down in one spot and print it out otherwise I won't remember everything I want to do. That could potentially be a bigger problem than laziness for me. Darn memory.

I'm knitting up sample #2 of my latest knit pattern. Not sure what I'm going to do with it. Thinking self publication for this little one. It was designed as the item I'm knitting for my Valentines Day secret swap partner. If I can get this second one knit up without too much hassle I just might offer the pattern for free to the swap group members and have it as a pay pattern for everyone else. We'll see. Anyway, back to work for me. :o)

New Year Goals

Good morning on this snowy Sunday. It looks like we didn't get nearly as much snow as the weather advisory said. The road seems pretty clear, although it is glistening with wet and ice. The driveway and walkways are snowed under, but only by a few inches. Even that little bit of the white stuff is going to be a pain this morning, though. We've got a gig this afternoon heading west toward the city. At first it looked like the weather would be so bad it would get canceled. Now it's just going to be an annoyance.

I've been thinking about setting some goals for myself this year. I never do this other than the typically lose weight, stay in shape resolutions. However, a lot of the podcasts I listen to have been talking about their goals, knitting and otherwise, for 2009. So it's got me thinking, what do I want to accomplish? Here's a few so far:
  • Submit. Take a chance and submit knit designs to magazines.
  • Play harder. Work on my fiddling skills more.
  • Get back on track with eating right.
  • Save more money.
ok, so four goals aren't a bad start I guess. I feel like I had something else in mind, but it's escaping me now. And since I mentioned submitting knit designs...... I got one accepted! That's all I'm saying about that now. ;)

A New Year

I can't believe a month has gone by since my last post! Like everyone else, this has been a busy time of the year for me. I managed to get all my Christmas knitting done on time (something I didn't think would happen this year). Dad loves the Chullo hat I made for him from the Knit Picks kit. He's been wearing the darn thing inside, outside, all the time. Mom and Annalee both appreciated their socks.... but Brandon takes the cake. This year I crocheted an afghan for him from Lion Brand Homespun yarn. (For the record, I will never use that yarn again! Ugh! Nightmares!) I did up large squares in three colors and joined it all together. I guess the finish project was about 6' by a little over 6'. It came out kinda squarish by accident, although it stretches more in one direction, so after use it'll become rectangular. The boys loves that afghan. Knowing that made all the frustration with the yarn worth it. (Yes, sappy.)

I was busy knitting away on a secret project after Christmas. I wrapped that up on Friday, but I can't let slip what it is for awhile.... Might take a few months before I can say and we'll see if I remember by then ;o) Because of the holiday knitting and then secret work I haven't had the time to write up a pattern for the Fairy Dance Hoods that are on my Etsy shop. I need to get to that soon, but first..... I joined the Valentines Day Swap on Ravelry and need to knit something for my secret swap partner. I have an idea, but I need to go through my stash yarn and see if I have something appropriate to do it in. If not I'll have to run to the LYS next week and pick something up.
